Mustard gas toxicity
The use of mustard agents in warfare, particularly sulphur mustard, dates back to the First World War and during recent years has caused death and suffering among both combatants and civilians in Iran. The exact mechanisms by which sulphur mustard exerts is numerous and debilitating toxic effects have been investigated in many laboratories but no clear picture has emerged. Until these mechanisms are fully understood, approaches to prevention and treatment of the toxic effects of such agents will lack a rational basis and are likely to be inefficient. We have conducted exhaustive reviews of the field and as a result a more complete account of the toxic mechanisms has emerged.
